With Daoyin, transitions through the four seasons are clear, as it originated in the northeastern parts of Asia which relied mainly on agriculture. It is a discipline, a form of training for health, and a healing art perfected by moving the body to combine breathing and mind(調心, 調身, 調息), primarily by moving the body and limbs in various angles and directions to rediscover physical vitality, and to normalize the body, even to rejuvenate an aged body back to youth.
In the modernized social structure where people are removed from any relationship with nature, people are gradually in the process of losing their various original innate physiological ability, from ever more insular lifestyles and lack of exercise, as well as biased thought.
And from the disharmony of mind & body, resulting in deterioration of sound mind and healthy body. In such a manner, having lost our health without our awareness, then being able to see the results in our bodies for the many negative changes. Twisting of the waist or hips, and changes to other parts to compensate, and the consequential changes to each part to be found everywhere on our body. And not only incongruencies external, but it is easy to come across cases of adverse changes to internal organs (five viscera & six entrails). Training in Daoyin can cure the root cause of these unhealthy conditions, with lifestyle & posture corrections along with remedies for structural problems, and improvements to normalcy possible for damaged nerve․igament․uscles, etc.
Daoyin is the oldest of measures for health, but in these modern times, it can be said to be the most ideal and the safest form of health maintenance and character cultivation program.
Daoyin is a workout which deals with both sides of Shape (形體) & Qi (氣).
While most exercises today deal with physical activity in the external sense only, Daoyin uses the process of gesticulating the body through various movements, to promote circulation of internal energy for harmony of yin & yang. Therefore, if a person who is following Daoyin practices movements for only the external appearance without properly learning the handling of Qi, its effects will be diminished substantially. Only by understanding Qi management, can minute movements of internal body organs be controlled, as well as controlling emotions and enabling temperament changes. The very name of Daoyin itself implies such a meaning. Originally the name constituted the first two Chinese characters on the front of each word from the saying, "Dao-Qi-Ling-Huo Yin-Ti-Ling-Rou(導氣令和 引體令揉)" to form the acronym "Dao-Qi-Yin-Ti(導氣引體)", which again was shortend to "Dao-Yin(導引)" with the meaning of an art form dealing with Shape and Qi. Its meaning is illustrated further as follows.
As explained, from the beginning the core center of Daoyin training was to activate the 뺘, and Daoyin which has carefully preserved the tradition proceeds, without exception, for each movement with education for how to direct the internal energy. For example, for Daoyin called Taichi Daoyin, after teaching the training method for dealing with "that energy innate to life itself(先天氣)" and "that energy after coming into being utilized for responding to the external world(後天氣)", training is conducted for a "method to bring these two energies together (先後天交易)." Whereby, the bodily joints would gain their proper basis for harmony of yin & yang energy, to be bonded of proper shape and harmonious internal energy. Master Zhang, Jing-ying imparted the authentic form of Hua Tuo, the Five Animals Qigong, in which according to the law of internal energy management, integral to the middle of each movement was a breathing technique called Tu-Na breathing, repeated in consideration for the energy circulation of a particular part, and it is regrettable to observe the following generations not passing along this method. Control of energy through movement is the way of Daoyin, whereby it is possible to achieve bodily equilibrium and internal transformation.
Daoyin concept does not rest solely on the physiological, but continues its influence to the control of the psychological. Daoyin basically looks at the human body as one, of both the physical and spiritual. Therefore, it becomes possible, through the intricate biofeedback of Daoyin training, to eliminate mental disorders. Emotional and mental problems must of necessity leave their mark on the body, whereby when such an influence, habitually reinforced results in the body being fixed in a state of bias. By correcting these biases in the body, is how it becomes possible to repair the emotional and mental anomalies.
As explained then, repeated training in Daoyin can derive in the ability to control even one’s emotions and thinking, to maintain a peaceful state of mind under various situations we face in the real world, and to use our emotions with proper disposal. Furthermore, changes in the body will result in the transformation of the mind, to overcome neurosis and depression, alleviation and relief from stress, making Daoyin to be a truly holistic approach to self management.
